Nature's Metamorphic Sanctuary – Essex Wildlife Trust
A space where guests can learn, rest, eat and shop, the renovation of Hanningfield Reservoir Nature Discovery Centre will blur the boundaries between the natural world and the multi-use space within. The concept, Nature's Metamorphic Sanctuary is born of circadian rhythms and animal dwellings, designed to stimulate the senses and reflect the beauty and fragility of the natural world with its constantly evolving rhythms. The centre will take on different characteristics throughout the year to reflect this environment and to create a sense of intrigue and curiosity for guests visiting the centre.
NATURE
The Centre nestles in the heart of a larger ecosystem; the panoramic views of the reservoir and landscape will be a key focal point.
SANCTUARY
Cocoon, rest, web or burrow; refuge and shelter is sought by every creature in its environment. Shape and form within the design are inspired by protection and sanctuary.
METAMORPHIC
Day to night, changes in temperature amd season are transformative cycles which drive the natural world. Light and shadow will create sensory play, mimicking nature.
SHAPE & FORM
The space is permeated by natural forms which inspire traffic flow and layout and echo the outdoor ecosystem. Flexible zoning and framing of the view are key objectives.
MATERIALS & COLOUR
A rich, organic colour palette of earth and wood create a feeling of being at home in nature. Locally sourced sustainable materials keep the environmental impact minimal.
LIGHT & SHADOWS
Natural and artificial light enhance the experience of the space. Layers of ambient, task and decorative lighting create subtle changes in the atmosphere, interacting with organic form and materials, producing light and shadow play.
EDUCATION HUB
Mycelium pendant lighting clusters are a reminder of nature's metamorphosis. Circular furniture can be arranged according to activity. Adjustable height stools offer further versatility of use. The display area holds seasonal specimens, twigs and flowers found onsite.
The hub encourages ‘discovery' – wall mounted viewing lenses and cavities on the floor and wall reveal botanical species which can be found in the surrounding environment. For children, these subtle sensory devices create mystery, intrigue and novelty which stimulate learning and curiosity and a visual connection with nature.
